VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS

The Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety.2007 VSC Decal

No citations are issued and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display if the vessel has passed the examination.

An example of some of the items checked include:

  • Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets)
  • Registration and numbering
  • Navigation lights
  • Ventilation
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
  • Battery cover and connections

All of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if missing or non-operating, can result in a citation if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard.

The Vessel Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to check that you meet the legal minimums and to potentially avoid a citation later. The Vessel Examination program of Flotilla 1101 will begin on Saturday, June 6, 2009 and will continue every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) until Saturday July 18, 2009. During this time, Vessel Examiner(s) will be on duty to inspect boats in the Towns of Chatham and Harwich Mass. To have your boat inspected, Call or email the Flotilla Staff Officer-Vessel Exams, Tom Siegel at 508-945-1050 and leave your name, phone number ( preferably your cell), location of your vessel and when you will be at your vessel. An examiner will either meet you there or call you about your exam. After July 18, 2009, an appointment for an exam can be made by calling or emailing Tom Siegel.
